Hilary Spaulding Namnath is a third generation attorney with over 30 years experience in estate planning. Her law practice consists of preparation of estate planning documents: wills, inter vivos trusts, special needs trusts, testamentary trusts, trust amendments, durable powers of attorneys, advance directives, and appointments of guardians. She has experience in probate and trust administration. Hilary Spaulding Namnath was born and raised in Santa Monica, California. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Environmental Studies at University of California at Santa Barbara. Hilary graduated from the University of Southern California Law School. She was admitted to the STATE BAR OF CALIFORNIA in 1982.
Karen Hawkey is thirty year veteran in business and financial services. Her most recent appointment is Vice President & Relationship Banking Manager for Opus Bank, for which she opened de novo three years ago in Downtown San Rafael. The bank provides resources for financing for thriving small and mid-sized businesses, entrepreneurs, and real estate investors toward rebuilding our local economies from the ground up. Previously, she worked for Citibank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America , & Citi National Bank. She was also founder of a contract technical staffing and consulting firm for five years that provided recruitment services for the most difficult to fill contracts and full-time requirements. Currently serving on the board of the Marin Economic Forum, Ms. Hawkey is also active with the San Rafael Chambers Economic Vitality Committee. Her community involvement also includes roles with the Marin Housing Authority, Warm Wishes, Terra Linda High School Arts and a sponsorship for the annual Sausalito Film Festival. She graduated from the University of San Diego, California Professional School of Banking.
Dr. Doris Bersing is a clinician, professor, and entrepreneur who has a successful track record in applying her clinical and business experience across a diverse array of healthcare environments: hospital, sub-acute, skilled nursing facilities, Senior Living, and now Home Care, Living Well Assisted Living at Home, where she provides world-class care backed by years of clinical research and data.
Aging Solutions’ founder and CEO, Terri Abelar, has been one of California’s leading consumer advocates helping older Americans. She has designed or helped design pioneering programs and services for seniors, and has given expert testimony on elder care issues to legislative committees in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. She has helped thousands of seniors and their adult children deal effectively with the emotionally draining issues that arise when seniors’ needs are changing and their need for services increases; she has also helped families recover millions of dollars in property and assets.
Her expertise on elder care issues is sought by medical and legal professionals and the media, and she is an effective and powerful speaker to groups on contemporary elder care and elder abuse issues. Before founding Aging Solutions, she was a social services supervisor at the Riverside County Office on Aging, where she specialized in elder abuse prevention, and helped develop The C.A.R.E. Program for interagency partnerships that in its first years, saved taxpayers millions of dollars. As part of California’s insurance advocacy program for seniors, HICAP, she counseled and fought on behalf of seniors seeking benefits denied to them by managed care health corporations, and those baffled by Medicare’s ever-changing policies and rules.
Moderator Kathleen Nemetz, MBA, CFP, is a co-founder of the Women's Collective of Marin. A certified financial planner and investments manager, Kathleen works with clients who want to establish solid financial foundations to realize their dreams. She earned her MBA in finance at Pace University in New York and is active with the California Society of CPAs Marin Chapter and the Marin County Bar. For older clients, Kathleen can offer invaluable knowledge of income generation and estate planning. Kathleen works closely with estate planning attorneys in planning for legacy gifts as well as the eventual disposition and investment of trusts and estates. She also manages income and trust accounts using ‘prudent man’ fiduciary standards. She is affiliated as a Registered Investment Advisor at McClurg Capital Corporation, San Rafael. She produces community television program appearing on Channel 26, Marin. An avid outdoorsperson, she enjoys hiking and biking the beautiful coastlines of Marin.
